Welcome to Downtown Middlesboro, KY
Nestled between the Cumberland and Pine Mountains of the Appalachian chain, Middlesboro, Kentucky is one of the only cities in the world built entirely inside of an ancient meteor crater. In 1674, Gabriel Arthur, was the first recorded Caucasian to pass through this area. As years passed, he was followed by world famous explores, Dr. Thomas Walker in 1750 and Daniel Boone in 1769.
In 1886, Alexander Alan Arthur, a business man from Knoxville, TN made his first trip to this area. After surveying the land, Arthur envisioned a city. He traveled to Ashville, North Carolina and England to raise funds for the development of the city. In 1980, the city was incorporated as “Middlesborough,” named after the town of Middlesbrough, which is located in River Tees, England. In 1894, the US Post Office began using the spelling “Middlesboro.”
